The East Hertfordshire Lodge No. 3748

by The East Hertfordshire Lodge 08 Oct, 2017
On Saturday 7th October, the East Hertfordshire Lodge marked a significant milestone in its history by reconnecting with its sister order, the East Hertfordshire Chapter, to host its fourth Annual Charity Quiz and Supper; in aid of the 2019 Festival for the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.

The East Hertfordshire Chapter, which is celebrating its centenary this year, and the East Hertfordshire Lodge severed all ties early in their history and have spent the best part of the last 100 years operating remotely from one another. This has now changed, thanks to the efforts of Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro James Harrison and the Secretary and Scribe E of the orders, W Bro Thomas Day and W Bro David Broomer, who sought to use both orders' shared commitments to charity (and love of a good quiz) as an opportunity to reconnect and raise some money for a good cause.

Their efforts proved to be a great success, with over 85 members from both orders and their family and friends coming together to test their brains and raise some cash. The evening, held at Mayflower Place in Hertingfordbury and superbly hosted by W Bro Tony Reffold and his wife Beanie, raised the princely sum of £452; all of which will be donated to the 2019 Festival on behalf of both orders.

Roll on next year's quiz!

Ritual, workings and Lodge of Instructions can all seem a bit daunting for younger (or, more accurately, newer) Freemasons so, as part of a new mentoring policy, the East Hertfordshire Lodge held its first ever 'Light Blue' LOI on 21st April.

The evening, at which more experienced 'dark blue' Masons were kindly asked to 'take the night off', was designed as an informal opportunity for Lodge Mentor W Bro Michael Dennis to provide the light blues with further explanation about some of the basic workings of the Lodge and the meaning behind some of the more unusual elements of ritual and Lodge etiquette. It also provided an opportunity for the light blues to ask any questions that they may have felt uncomfortable asking in a normal LOI or Lodge meeting.

W Bro Michael Dennis was ably assisted by the Worshipful Master W Bro Norman Hollands and Bro Director and Assistant Director of Ceremonies W Bros Matthew Dennis and Ali Osman; between whom we had a veritable treasure trove of Masonic knowledge!

The evening was a great success and plans are underway to make this a more regular event in the near future.

On Friday 7th April the East Hertfordshire Lodge of Instruction held its annual supper. This purely social event was an opportunity for the Brethren to take a night off from ritual and enjoy some fish and chips with their partners. It was a very delicious evening!

We're very excited to learn that our nominated charity has been selected to receive one of 30 donations of £300 from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Hertfordshire, in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the United Grand Lodge of England this year. Our chosen charity was the Hertfordshire Society for the Blind, who we recently shared our 100th birthday year with. We are extremely pleased that we can continue support such a worthy local charity.

W Bro Matthew Dennis has completed a double marathon over two days in Iceland to raise money for the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys, as part of the 2019 Provincial Festival.

W Bro Matt trekked through rugged terrain and rivers, albeit with stunning views, to complete the challenge and, if all the pledged sponsorship is received, will have raised the best part of £1,000!

The Lodge congratulates W Bro Matt on his impressive achievement!

Members of the East Hertfordshire Lodge and their family and friends headed to The Bull Hotel in Gerrard's Cross for this year's Ladies' Festival. The highlight of the weekend was the gala on the evening of Saturday 27th February, which saw around sixty guests enjoying excellent food, followed by dancing until the small hours of the morning.

The evening also included a raffle, which raised £255 in aid of the Herts Young Homeless ; the charity chosen by the Worshipful Master, Thomas Day, and his partner Thomas French.

All in all, a highly enjoyable weekend!

The evening culminated with the presentation of a donation of £1,915 to the Hertfordshire Society for the Blind ; a local charity who were also fortunate enough to celebrating their centenary this year.
